I have to admit, when I first started watching the trailer for this, it reminded me of some cheesy Nick toon or something. And since I hadn't heard or seen anything about Papo & Yo before, I didn't really expect anything from it. Then about a minute or so into it, the trailer came to the game play footage and it caught me off guard. Not only do the graphics look legit, (as shown in the picture provided), but the game play looks really promising too.
Anyway, after looking into it a bit further, I came across a post on the PlayStation Blog from the game's Creative Developer, Vander Caballero. In the post he discusses the games heartfelt background and how it's actually a fictionalization of his own childhood when he was growing up. The symbolism is easy enough to follow - he is the boy (Quico) and the Monster with the addiction to poisonous frogs, represents his Father who it turns out was an alcoholic and a drug addict.
Apparently, his Dad was a good guy when he was sober, but he would become an entirely different person when he was wasted and would get aggressive with the young Vander, who could only find solace in the imaginary worlds of his video games. This all might be a little more obvious if you speak Portuguese, or Spanish, or whatever the title is written in, cause I'm guessing that Papo & Yo translates to something like, Father & I, but I could be way off with that.
Needless to say, I stand corrected, and I'm willing to to admit that I was wrong in my first impression about this game. Check it out though, see what you think...
