More BATTLEFIELD 3: Multiplayer Info

PlayStation 3 Magazine
recently got a chance to sit down with developer DICE and did a great feature story this month on the highly anticipated Battlefield 3 coming this Fall. In it DICE discusses how the battle between themselves and Activision's Call of Duty franchise is not in fact the biggest hurdle that they have to overcome, but rather, the public awareness of Battlefield 3.

In a time when people are overwhelmed by First-Person Shooters, DICE claims that their most challenging task will be to stand out as a franchise in such a crowded niche and gain the trust of gamers who might have never played any of the Battlefield games before.

The article also offered an in-depth look at the revamped classes that will be featured in BF3 along with the changes associated with them, as well as some new features such as regenerative health for vehicles. And aside from giving a play-by-play account of their hands-on experience with the new Frostbite 2 Engine (as showcased in 'Metro Station' -- a new multiplayer map set right in the heart of Paris), they also mentioned a new 10 level, 2 player co-op mode that will reportedly follow a story independent from that in the Single-Player mode.

Other key changes include:
  • Four classes (Assault, Engineer, Support, Recon) that now have more customization options
  • Vehicles can now be disabled before they are completely destroyed
  • Assault Class now carries medical gear (Medics have been replaced by Support Class)
  • Points given for Suppression Fire
  • A "Battlelog" -- essentially a free version of Call of Duty's "Elite" (or something similar).
